Every day, cancer patients in our area miss potentially life-saving treatment because they are too ill to drive themselves, or are unable to find a ride. The American Cancer Society aims to avoid this situation through their Road to Recovery® program. Local drivers are available to transport patients to and from cancer-related appointments at no cost.
“I’m always so touched when I see how kind people are,” said Marybeth Torsell, Program Manager for the American Cancer Society. “These drivers are willing to use their vehicles to take complete strangers to their treatment, but are rewarded with knowing that they are lifting a burden off of someone who is already carrying such a heavy load.”
Physician’s referral are not necessary for patients, but advanced notice is required to secure a ride, and rides depend on driver availability.
For more information about Road to Recovery, or to request a ride, please call 1 (800) 224-2345, anytime day or night. A Cancer Information Specialist is available to help 24 hours a day.
If you are interested in volunteering to be a driver, see this page or call the 800 number above. Drivers must be between the ages of 18-85, have access to a vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and proof of auto insurance. New Driver training must be completed online, or in person. A criminal and motor vehicle background check will be completed by ACS before you can begin.
If you would like to make a donation to the program, include a note in your donation that you would like it to go directly to Road to Recovery. You can make a donation here.
