Many of us have found ourselves working from home in recent days. Teachers and students are adjusting to remote coursework, and need a space to complete homework, too. This may create hectic home environments, with so many people requiring workspaces. It is possible to coexist and work together in peace! Get Dressed. Routine is important, even if you’re not in your usual work environment. The image of never having to change out of your pjs comes to mind when thinking of “home office” scenarios. However, many experts suggest that getting dressed as if it was a normal day at the office helps in multiple ways. You may find that are more inspired to work when dressed accordingly. Clothing can set the mood, and keep you from falling victim to the distraction of household tasks, or watching TV.
Take time to connect with others. It’s tempting to keep your phone close at hand, but it can be a huge distraction. Dedicate certain times of the work day to check in with friends and family. Video chats can help us feel even more connected. There’s Skype, Facetime, WhatsApp, Instagram & Facebook messengers…the list goes on. If you want to get together with multiple people, Zoom is a popular free option.
Take breaks. Get up and go for a walk! Stretch those legs, and breathe in some fresh air. The change of scenery may lighten your mood, and give you some ideas when you get back home. Work in the garden, or get your home ready for spring. Garlock Bros. shared some great suggestions to prepare your home for warmer weather.
Setup a Dedicated Workspace. Kicking your feet up with the TV on, and laptop on your legs is the preferred work method of some. If you have the space, turn a table or desk into a dedicated workspace. If you do not have the luxury of a semi-permanent desk relocation, find a space you can setup each morning. For example, after breakfast, perhaps the table can be cleared off and reserved for work.
