Q: What does the city of Findlay do to keep the hanging baskets of flowers on Main Street looking so nice? — Sharon Elchert, Fostoria.
A: The lush hanging baskets are the work of Stratton Greenhouses, near Bluffton, which is under contract to downtown merchants for most of them, and to the city for those in Dorney Plaza.
Owner Steve Stratton says the baskets are watered every other evening and fertilized every third watering.
“Water and fertilizer are the key,” he said. “If you let them get too dry once, they’re hard to bring back.
“You have to soak them. Never, never skip a watering. A thundershower is helpful, but if you don’t get an inch of rain from it, you’re toast.” — Stratton; Paul Schmelzer, city safety-service director.
