A mobile camera unit was set up at the intersection of Main and Main Cross streets for the last few days (it has now been taken down), similar to the unit pictured here. The Mayor’s office explained to us that it was monitoring the new mid-block crossings.
Lights embedded in the road at the crossings are meant to automatically come on to alert drivers when a pedestrian is present. The lights have not been working properly. The trailer was investigating the issue: if the lights are coming on when no one is there, if something else is triggering them, or otherwise. City Council discussed the issues at their May 7th meeting.
